The Balearic government is making a determined effort to ensure that the local beaches will be safer this year, in an effort to reduce the number of deaths from drowning. The ministries of tourism and the interior have signed agreements with the councils of Alcudia, Muro, Santa Margalida and Campos in Majorca, Ibiza, Sant Josep, Alaior, Sant Luis and Formentera. Thanks to the agreements, information panels will be installed on the beaches and first aid equipment will be purchased. The north of Majorca will benefit most, with improvements being made to the beaches of Alcudia, Muro, Can Picafort and Son Bauló. Details were announced in Muro yesterday, where government leader Francesc Antich and ministers Josep Maria Costa and Celestí Alomar went to sign the agreements.
