Germ warfare in Majorca´s swimming pools

Visitors to Majorca are being asked to provide information about illnesses they may have caught while on holiday on the island. An independent consumer watchdog is studying findings amid fears that a potentially fatal stomach bug may have been spread between swimming pools on Majorca. Holiday Travelwatch is supporting compensation claims from several hundred British holiday makers who contracted the gastrointestinal disease Cryptosporidiosis while staying at seven hotels in Majorca last year. The disease, which is transmitted through water borne parasites, causes severe diarrhoea, stomach cramps and vomiting lasting up to two weeks. It is thought to be spread through swimming pools. In January, the tour operator JMC paid interim compensation payments totalling more than £1-2 million to 680 British tourists who had food poisoning and contracted the gastric disease whilst staying at a hotel in Calas de Mallorca.
