War of words in Calvià over pub crawls

British tour operators and Calvia council are locked in talks about the local authority's plan to ban pub crawls. Tour operators said yesterday that, while the decision has been welcomed by bar owners excluded from the gigantic pub crawls, along with the smaller independent tour companies, the larger bars and the major tour operators are trying to persuade the council to ease restrictions. Independent bar owners in Magalluf, a hugely popular destination for the weekly pub crawls which are sold to tourists across the island by some tour operators, have felt the full effects of the pub crawls and the rise of the all inclusive holiday. One bar owner in the resort said that “great gangs of people go on the pub crawls, sometimes as many as 200 and they all march through Magalluf calling in the participating bars, which are mainly the large pubs. “We're open for business and have to watch hundreds of potential clients herded along the street, by-passing our bars.
