Children at the American International School in Portals Nous have taken part for the tenth year running in the Readathon 2000 - 2001 campaign, raising money for charity by reading as many books as possible during two weeks. This year they have managed to raise the record sum of 536'625 pesetas. The Readathon began back in 1984 and has become a success story in helping children with various diseases. So far, 3'718 schools and organisations in the UK and in Europe have taken part in the event and a total of 11.6 million pounds has been raised. The aim of the Readathon campaign is to encourage schoolchildren to read more books and at the same time, by doing this, helping children who suffer from serious illnesses. Since its start, Readathon has helped to stimulate thousands of children to read more and it has become Britain's largest sponsored literary event. All the money raised by the campaign is donated equally to two charities linked to children: Sargent Cancer Care for Children and The Roald Dahl Foundation. The Sargent Cancer Care for Children is dedicated to help and care for children with cancer, as well as assisting their families. The Roald Dahl Foundation uses the donated money to help children and young people in the UK who suffer from cancer, Hodgkin's disease, Leukaemia, epilepsy, blood disorders and head injuries.
