Next week's wave of strike action by Palma taxi drivers at Palma airport has been averted, but there are still no guarantees that industrial action will not be taking place over the summer - holding thousands of tourists to ransom. Yesterday the Autonomous Association of taxi Drivers called off the strike planned for Monday and Tuesday next week after a meeting with Palma City Council and airport authority AENA was confirmed for Thursday of next week. However, depending on the outcome of the meeting, further industrial action may well be called if the taxi drivers do not receive a satisfactory response from the airport and Palma authorities. This latest dispute has been caused by Palma airport authority's refusal to improve security in the taxi rank and have a security guard stationed on the new taxi rank at all times to ensure that the newly installed taxi rank and passenger pick-up system works. Both Palma city council and the airport authority will be keen to ensure that industrial action can be averted this summer.
