Spain has taken the controversial decision of approving the so-called morning after pill , the contraceptive which recently became legal in Britain. From this Friday the drug, which will be marketed in Spain under the name Norlevo, will be available in chemists. However, it will not be so readily available as in Britain and women must have a doctor's certificate approving its sale. Also, the drug is not cheap with a packet of two pills costing in excess of 5'000 pesetas. However, the move has caused a public outcry with Church leaders slamming the Ministry of Health's action. Pressure from the Church had meant that the drug had been placed on hold, but the Spanish Ministry of Health decided this week that Norlevo could be legally sold in chemists, providing that it had been prescribed by a doctor. In Britain it is available without a prescription.
