The Balearic government is threatening to take legal action against Palma City Council and industrial refuse truck drivers. The row is festering over industrial waste which is being dumped at Son Reus, on the outskirts of Palma, without complying with the selective rubbish laws introduced in February last year. The president of the municipal water board EMAYA, Maria Crespi, gave the order to open Son Reus for a period of 15 days so that the 3'000 overflowing skips dotted about Palma could be removed and emptied in the best interests of public health and safety. However, the Balearic Ministry for the Environment intends to send a team of inspectors to Son Reus to see if refuse truck drivers are complying with the selective waste laws. The Ministry is confident it is on to a winner because Son Reus does not yet have selective waste facilities and that without the necessary machinery, industrial waste can not be separated
