Huge loope-hole in tourist tax uncovered

A study of the Balearic government's proposed tourist tax plan has a huge “leak” according to the Balearic University's report. Professor for Economics, Eugeni Aguilo, who co-ordinated the study, revealed yesterday that 125'000 tourists per day will slip through the loop hole and not pay the tax, just over half the amount of holiday makers who, the Balearic government claims, will pay the tax. Aguilo explained yesterday that around three per cent of tourists coming to the Balearics will avoid paying the tax and that the shortfall, will have to be met by hotel owners, as tour operators have made it clear that they do not want to pay. “The tax is unbalanced,” he said, adding that while it will apply to 60 million hotel nights, “ it should be applicable to 100 million nights.”
