One mooring for one man and his boat

One person, one mooring is the new regulation in accordance with Balearic legislation approved last Friday. Balearic Environment Minister, Margalida Rosselló, explained yesterday that the new norms have been introduced to install some form of order in the nautical industry which is under increasing pressure from the continually growing waiting lists for moorings in the Balearics. She said that in accordance with the new legislation, boat owners who do not have another mooring in the Balearics will be permitted to use their mooring for a period of three years. The Minister also said that preference will be given to those on the waiting lists whose boat fits the size of a vacant berth and to Balearic residents. According to Rosselló, there are currently 20'000 moorings in the Balearics and 30'000 recreational vessels. But during the summer the number of recreational boats rises to at least 37'000, the bulk of which are from outside the Balearics. The Minister explained that 63 per cent of the region's moorings are managed by the Balearic government which directly controls 16 per cent and indirectly manages 47 per cent.
