Over the past seven months, the water level in the Gorg Blau reservoir has risen so much that the parched banks of dried earth and rocks below the water line are no longer visible. Although rainfall in Majorca over the winter was lower than the norm, it was, however, enough to substantially replenish water levels in the island's two main dams and provide a ray of hope that this summer, the island will not be gripped by another drought and water crisis. The photograph on the left was taken on August 13 last year, the other on Thursday and the difference is clear. The surge in the level of water has also enabled the water board, EMAYA, to lift the ban on fishing and this week the president of EMAYA, Maria Crespo, got her fishing rod to show willing and launch the re-opening of the fishing season.
