Sir Harry Secombe has died aged 79, his daughter Jenny announced yesterday. The Welsh comedian, writer, singer and latterly the presenter of the religious programme Highway, has died of prostate cancer at home. He had suffered a stroke in 1999, after which he retired from showbusiness. Sir Harry's rise to fame began in the postwar years when he became a celebrated radio star with The Goon Show. He met fellow Goon Spike Milligan while he was in the forces during the Second World War. Peter Sellers and Michael Bentine were the other members. Spike Milligan has given a personal tribute to his longtime friend. I grieve for an unbelievable friend, the comedian said. For many years Sir Harry owned a house in Majorca and he was a frequent visitor. He had many friends within the community.
Farewell Sir Harry
