Lamb is back on the menu

Majorcan abattoirs started slaughtering sheep again last night after a deal was reached between the company which runs Palma abattoir and the main meat suppliers on the island. All parties involved met yesterday and they will meet again after Easter to work out the overtime costs and how it will be paid. Talks were tense, both parties threatened to walk out of negotiations on a number of occasions and a deal was only reached when the Balearic Minister for Agriculture, Mateu Moro intervened. The lamb sector was thrown into disarray at the end of last week after the meat suppliers, who are responsible for buying the lamb, taking the animal to slaughter and then sell the meat to the butchers, threatened to stop taking animals to slaughter because abattoir overtime rates were to go up by 50 per cent. The long term dispute has not, however, been solved.
