Palma's Son San Joan airport is the safest in Spain, according to the vice president of the Professional Association of Fire Engineers, Guillermo García Pol. Tomorrow Son San Joan will be the scene of a spectacular simulated training exercise which will involve an aircraft with landing problems crashing on touch down into a coach carrying six tourists. Palma fire service and 85 members of the airport's two fire units with support from the Guardia Civil, medical units and the National Police will all be participating in the training exercise. The operation is part of the fifth Emergency Services Congress which is being held in Palma. Pol said yesterday that Palma airport is one of the safest in Spain, pointing out that over the past year, two flights have been diverted to Palma for emergency landings. Pol said that the fact Palma has two runways and that the airport is the headquarters for all of Spain's main airlines, apart from Iberia, is also an important factor, so too is the adjoining air base which means that the air force can always be used in case of a major emergency, in the air or on the ground. Pol said Palma is an ideal emergency airport, which the conference will witness tomorrow.
