The Balearic government has altered its stance on solving the region's long term water problem, albeit slightly, and yesterday Chief Minister Francesc Antich asked his predecessor and Spanish Environment Minister, Jaume Matas, to name a day and a time when a water deal can be signed which will include, for the moment, just one of Matas's proposed four desalination plants. Initially the Balearic government, fuelled by the anti-Matas local Environment Minister Margalida Rossello, rejected Matas's offer, but considering the deal is worth a central government investment of 33.700 million pesetas to help meet the region's water needs, Antich now appears in a rush to sign on the dotted line.
