The Guardia Civil in Minorca have halted a small consignment of fodder, because of suspicions that it may have been made with bonemeal. The product has been sealed to prevent it reaching the market and samples have been sent to a laboratory on the Peninsula to determine the exact composition. Sources said the quantity was small but no exact figures have been given, nor has the place where it was detected been revealed. Agriculture minister Mateu Morro, who went to Minorca yesterday for talks, said that the use of fodder of animal origin had been banned for cattle since 1994 but the ban did not come into force for other non-ruminants until January 1.
