Traditions die hard and it would take more than a little rain to keep the crowds away from Dijous Bo or Good Thursday, the island's biggest agricultural fair which was held in Inca yesterday. But you didn't have to be a farmer to appreciate everything that was on view. The livestock show was one of the main draws. The local authorities are promoting native breeds of animals, which are once again gaining favour. And for many people the fair provides an opportunity to see them in close up. Small children were delighted with the opportunity of being able to get close - but not too close - to pigs, horses, poultry and other animals. The stalls selling local produce also did brisk businesses, especially those selling upmarket products. This is one of the ways in which Majorcans are now reaffirming their identity, and the government is encouraging it with its advertising campaigns. There were also stands for ceramics, clothing, plants, farm equipment and the usual gift stalls you find at every market. Inca being the leather capital of the island, leather fashions were very much to the fore, with a couple of well-attended fashion shows. And, of course, the bars and restaurants made a fortune catering for the thirsty and hungry visitors who found mingling with the crowds a tiring business.
