Majorca hit by strong winds of up to 91kph

Winds of up to 91kph blew down trees and shop signs and broke windows throughout Majorca yesterday. Capdepera was the worst hit area, with winds reaching 91kph, while in Palma, particularly in the dock area, the winds were 67kph. Agustin Jansà, head of the Balearic weather bureau, said that the situation got worse mid morning when the winds were from the south west. He added that winds would be more moderate today and there would be some rainfall. Jansà said that the situation was normal for this time of year. In Palma, most of the damage involved branches falling from trees, tiles from roofs and shops signs and hoardings being blown down. Two cars parked in Calle General Riera and Arxiduque Luis Salvador were damaged when branches fell on them. The fire brigade, which had already been in action in Via Roma, Calle Salvador Dali and Son Cotoner, was called out by people who saw the incident. Various drivers and motorcyclists reported losing control of their vehicles temporarily because of the fierce winds. A pine tree was blown down in Avda Garcia Ros in Palma Nova and was quickly removed by firemen and the local police. Similar incidents were reported in Santa Margalida, Calvia, Arenal, Porto Cristo and the road to Gracia mountain. Glass doors and windows were broken but no injuries were reported.
