British tourists at a nearly full Can Picafort aparthotel lst night narrowly avoided being injured when one of the six apartment blocks on the holiday complex partitially collapsed. The front of the two-story building gave way at 8pm and initially the emergency services feared that holidaymakers were trapped and injured in the rubble. However, miraculously the block was empty with most of the guests in the complex restaurant having dinner. One British tourist said that he and his family were having dinner when everybody was asked to leave the restuarant and gather for a roll call. Apparebtly there collapse of the front of the building created little noise and all of the diners were unaware of wjhat had happend. Hotel staff asked for all of the people in block E to make themselves known which is when it was confirmed that none of the holidaymekers had been injured or were trapped under the wreckage of twisted metal and ruble. The Mayor of Santa Margalida, Antonio del Olmo, arrived at the scene minutes after a fleet of seven ambulances, firemen, the Guardia Civil and the local police had rushed to the scene and he confirmed that there were no injuries.
