The King of Spain and his Bribon crew were able to enjoy their rest day yesterday, safe in the knowledge that they will return to action in the Copa del Rey this morning leading the fleet in first place. Despite the fact that the Italian yacht Brava Q8 won the 105 nautical miles through-the-night long leg of the regatta, the Bribon managed to defend its top spot. There were few incidents in the longest leg of the regatta, although the unreliable wind complicated racing. When the fleet reached Cala Figuera, conditions went extremely calm only to be followed by a brief storm. When the fleet rounded the Island of Cabrera, the wind changed direction forcing many to head for the coast, but a fresh burst of wind provided those crews which had stayed out at sea with a significant advantage. Yesterday, while the 120 crews competing for the illustrious Copa del Rey trophy took the day easy, the Spanish olympic yachting team was presented at the Real Club Nautico. The team, made up of 17 yachtsmen and women, are hoping to improve on their performance at the Atlanta Olympics at the Sydney Games.
