Yesterday was the first official day of the summer holidays as far as the security forces and airport authorities were concerned, with the first wave of Spanish holidaymakers flying off for their summer holidays while others started flying in their masses to the key tourist airport, such as Palma's Son San Joan. This summer, Palma airport will see the implementation of a new summer operation which has been instigated by the Spanish airport and traffic control authority AENA, in co-operation with the security forces and the airlines. While this weekend's air traffic is not expected to show a sharp increase, staff at check-in desks and departure lounges will be increased as will policing and security measures at Palma airport. Bars and restaurants are also going to be open longer and all the maintenance and cleaning services boosted in order to ensure that the airport flows as smoothly as possible over the summer and that the terminal is ready to deal with any form of interruptions and delays. The principal aim is to provide travellers with better care and attention - one of the key areas the European Union wants to see improved in all member states in time for next summer.
