The Guardia Civil said yesterday that the three young Germans detained on Thursday in connection with the brutal murder of an elderly German woman in Germany, have apparently been living as tramps on Majorca ever since the crime was carried out in May. The two men, Holder Steiner aged 26, Mario Welbers, aged 22 and his 21-year-old sister Simone, are believed to have fled Germany after they apparently broke into the home of a 74-year-old widow in the town of Becholt on the night of May 15. They allegedly ransacked the house, stealing money and jewellery, before killing the pensioner. The trio are then said to have headed to the main railway station at around 4am, but at the last minute changed direction for another station at Wesel, giving police the slip. A reconstruction of the crime, led German police to suspect that the suspects had headed to either France of Spain. But, having arrived in Majorca on the ferry from Valencia, they had no money and the crime received massive press coverage in Germany. German police received information that they were in Majorca and the Guardia Civil launched an investigation. On Tuesday afternoon, a routine patrol spotted the three tramps wandering around Lluchmajor and asked to see their identification and they were subsequently arrested.
