‘Bon dia turista', says Consell

The Insular Council of Majorca has handed out 3'500 copies of a basic Catalan phrase book “Vacances a Mallorca” which has been produced in an effort to encourage tourists to try their hand at speaking Catalan. The booklet has been produced in association with the Capdepera Council and distributed to all the main tourist resorts where they will be available at the tourist information offices. The Insular Council's co-ordinator of Culture and Youth, Nanda Ramon, said yesterday that the initiative follows the Insular Council's mandate of promoting Catalan, Majorcan culture and increasing people's awareness to the existence and use of the Catalan language. The phrase book consists of 64 pages which include the Spanish translations of the phrases as well as translations in English, Italian, French and German. But apart from basic and key words, the booklet will also include important phrases to help foreign visitors get around the island in Catalan.
