The Balearic government yesterday approved a motion to put the start of the summer sales back to the fourth Monday of July as opposed to the first. The government's plan is to respect the dates of the winter sales but delay the summer bargains. Presidential secretary Antoni Garcias, making the announcement yesterday, admitted that the decision will not please the hypermarkets and shopping centres, but the main idea behind the change is to ensure that shopkeepers have access to a larger market bolstered by tourists during the two peak summer months and will therefore have a better opportunity to boost revenue. Providing the Pound remains at its current dizzy heights against the Peseta then shopkeepers can look forward to lucrative summer sales with visitors being tempted by a wealth of bargains.
