King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia of Spain yesterday presided over the World Red Cross Day ceremony in Palma during which the King presented the annual Red Cross Spain awards and encouraged the people and institutions involved to continue with their valuable work. Among the prize winners this year was the Balearic bank Sa Nostra and the ceremony was attended by local politicians and dignitaries. The King, on behalf of himself and the Queen, stressed the vital importance of the work carried out by the Red Cross in his closing speech and congratulated the prize winners for their contribution to helping humanity across the world. The slogan for yesterday's Word Red Cross Day was the strength of humanity and the King reminded all of society that it has a duty to respond to humanitarian crises across the globe. King Juan Carlos also praised the work of the international Red Cross, not only because of the work it does to help victims of war and famine, but also because of the preventative work which is carried out such as rehabilitation, development and creating employment.
