Tourist tax is star project

The Balearic Government is making the controversial tourist tax their “star” policy for the next 12 months and they expect that it will be enforced in time for next summer. The government wants to charge tourists about 3'000 pesetas for visiting Majorca. At the moment they are considering only charging holidaymakers who stay in hotels and holiday apartments. The proposed levy has plenty of support in Majorca but it has been slammed by tour firms and holidaymakers. Some tourists have said that they will not return to Majorca if they are financially penalised. All money raised through the tax will be used to pay for environmental projects. Balearic leader Francesc Antich has said that tourists who love Majorca will not mind paying because it is an investment in the island's future. The government also says that other countries have introduced tourist taxes.
