Cconsumer groups in the Balearics and across Spain yesterday welcomed a move by Brussels to protect and promote the rights of air passengers in the European Union. Brussels will launch a campaign to make it easier for the victims of air delays and cancellationa to claim compensation and a new set of norms will be introduced to make it easier for passengers to make claims. According to Brussels, many Europeans are unaware of their consumer rights or what action can be taken. The European Commmission intends to notify all the European Union's airports and travel agencies of the new EU initiative and provide them with the necessary information, so that they will be in a position to inform consumers of their rights and what action to take. A spokesperson for the Spanish Consumers Federation said yesterday that the move is a very positive one as the majority of air passengers feel that air delays are unjustifiable on the part of the airlines. A campaign will also be launched in Spain to encourage more and more consumers to claim immediately as the process can be a long one, not only to ensure swift payment, but also to make airlines aware of discomfort and the complications air delays cause for travellers.
