Airport to become maintenance hub

Europe's top airline maintenance, company FLS Aerospace, which has operations at all of the UK's main airports, including Gatwick, Heathrow, Stansted and Dublin, has joined forces with Air Europe in the bidding for the new hanger at Palma's Son Sant Joan airport, which Lufthansa and Spanair have also lodged a joint play for. The construction of the new hanger, which, due to the moves made by the two independent joint ventures, has become a more viable venture and will guarantaee the creation of 300 jobs, according to the Balearic Finance Minister, Joan Mesquida. But more importantly the involvement of some of Europe's top airline maintenance companies, will mean that Palma airport will be able to boast some of the highest maintenance services and facilities in Europe, which also enable Spanish and international airlines to carry out repairs in Palma without having to fly back to their headquarters or service centres. Spanish Airline and Traffic Control authority AENA, which currently manages Palma airport, has been accused by both Spanair and Air Europa of not taking the contract seriously and that the final decisions will be a political one made by AENA.
