A quick sharp shock to end water crisis

The Balearic government yesterday announced a series of “shock” tactics in order to resolve the water crisis in time for the summer season. Balearic Environment Minister, Margalida Rossello, said yesterday that the water plan will allow a further 48.500 cubic metres of water per day to be pumped into the supply system and she claims that it will be sufficient to guarantee a regular supply. Rossello announced the measures after a meeting with Chief Minister, Francesc Antich, and the director general of Water Resources. Included in the plan are immediate measures to improve water pumping stations and the system's infrastructure, some of which are currently undergoing a five-year renovation plan, so that they can be brought into operation before the summer. The Environment Minister said that the plan has been drawn up based on the hypothesis that the level of natural water resources in Majorca will not increase over the next four months. Antich expressed his relief that satisfactory solutions have been drawn up, after the internal battle the water crisis caused over the water shortage earlier this month, and warned that he is not prepared to enter into any more political arguments over water.
