A unilateral war on noise is to be waged this year. The Federation of Balearic Local Councils, chaired by the mayor of Calvia, Margarita Nájera, announced yesterday that the Federation has started looking for joint solutions to the problem of late night noise contamination from bars, clubs and people throughout the Balearics. During the last week of this month, council representatives from each of the Balearics islands will meet to discuss a number of key problems, in particular street noise. Najera said yesterday that the problem is shared by many of the tourist resorts. She said that with regard to controlling music levels, automatic systems can be installed which monitor noise, such as decibel metres, similar to those installed in bars in Calvia and Palma. But it appears that the problem is growing across the Balearics and the Federation has organised the four-day circle of meetings in response to pleas from mayors who want to meet the experts in order to ease the noise problems.
