Government and Palma city council are at loggerheads

THE Palma city council and the Baleric government are at loggerheads over the two major problems affecting the island, rubbish disposal and water. The latest crisis arose following the decision of EMAYA, the council-run water board, not to allow any more builders' rubble to be dumped at Son Reus. Margalida Rossello, the Balearic minister of the environment, who belongs to the Green Party, and Maria Antonia Munar, president of the Council of Majorca, who heads the UM (Majorcan Union) accused the conservative-led council of party politics. In refusing to open Son Reus for builders' rubble, the council is ignoring a government resolution ordering it to open the installations on a provisional basis, but Rosselló said that her department would not be seeking a court order to enforce the resolution.
