Smokers now have to pay 10 ptas a pack more for popular brand

Some leading brands of cigarettes, including Marlboro, went up by an average of ten pesetas a pack yesterday. The new prices were set by the tobacco market committee and were published in the Official State Gazette on Monday. Marlboro is the second most popular make of light tobacco in Spain, accounting for 18.2 per cent of the market after Fortuna (29.1 per cent). Its “light“ range is the third biggest seller in that market, accounting for 13.7 per cent of sales. Marlboro now cost 375 pesetas a packet. The JPS American Blend and American Blend Superlights Lights cost 245 pesetas, and the American Blend Lights are 50 pesetas more. The Gauloises Blondes are 295 pesetas. The price increase also affects some brands of cigars and cheroots, such as Churchill and Corona.
