War racing over the tourist tax

The Confederation of Balearic Business Associations (CAEB) warned yesterday that the organisation intends to adopt whatever stance necessary, in opposition to the proposed tourist tax. President of the Association, Josep Oliver, said yesterday “I have yet to hear a convincing argument for the need for the tax to be introduced.” “No other tourist region in the Mediterranean has such a tax,” Oliver added before conceding that some form of tourist tax will be introduced in the Balearics. Oposition is mounting against the tourist tax. A movement for businesses against the tax has already been established with companies from all sectors of the tourist industry joining the campaign to impede it. Oliver said that the tourist industry already pays its taxes through the airport taxes, water and waste collection bills that hotels pay on behalf of their clients, the tourists.
