Suspect did not mean to kill German tycoon

The prime suspect in the Capdepera murder, German millionaire businessman Gunter Ulrich Schneider, whose body was found last month five years after he disappeared, was ordered to be held unconditionaly in Palma prison, while the suspect's wife was released by the Manacor court presiding over the case yesterday. Jean Chanfreut and his Italian wife Antonia Custodia finally arrived in Palma on Sunday morning and yesterday appeared before Manacor judge Cristina Pancorbo. Appearing before the judge, Jean Chanfreut exonerated his wife. The couple were arrested in Granada last week and were brought to Palma under a Guardia Civil escort. 45-year-old Chanfreut appeared in court accompanied by his lawyer and apparently admitted to having killed the German businessman for whom he worked in a Capdepera estate agents. The accused said that the reasons behind the conflict between the two men were financial and confessed that while his intention was not to kill Gunter Ullrich at the end of 1995, he battered him with a baseball bat, causing his death.
