Boats to be checked for killer seaweed

Various maritime and fishing experts yesterday called on the authorities to step up campaigns to watch out for and erradicate the caulerpa taxifolia, dubbed the ‘killer seaweed' because it drives away fish and kills off meadows of Neptune Grass. Inspecting the bottom of yachts and fishing boats which arrive from areas where the seaweed has been found was one of the suggestions made at a meeting of representatives of the boards of fisheries, shores and biodiversity, the Balearic University, the Mediterranean Institute of Advanced Studies and the Centre of Advanced Studies of Blanes.
