THE New Year came in with a bang not a whimper, as revellers set off firecrackers and rockets as the clock struck midnight, beating the official fireworks display by half an hour.
But the official show, which was organised by Ibatur, the Balearic government's tourism office, was worth waiting for. It had been moved to the Dique del Oeste, following complaints that previous displays in the old part of the city were causing damage to historical buildings such as the Cathedral. The show could be seen across the entire bay of Palma and it was admired by residents and tourists allike.
It cost 30 million pesetas to organise.
