A sperm whale breaching in waters off Mallorca has attracted attention on social media in recent hours. The video, shared by the Azulsalvaje Mallorca account on Instagram, shows one of the animals emerging from the sea, with a second whale visible nearby.
The footage provides a clear view of behaviour that is not often seen at the surface. While sperm whales are present in the Mediterranean, such sightings — particularly involving breaching — are relatively uncommon.
The images were accompanied by a message describing the encounter as “an incredible, unforgettable experience” and noting the rarity of seeing the animals leap from the water.
The post also highlighted the risks facing sperm whales, including pollution, plastic waste and maritime traffic, even in the waters around the Balearic Islands. It called for greater efforts to protect their habitat.
The sighting follows a recent report of a shark in the same area and has prompted renewed attention on the biodiversity of the Balearic Sea and the need for its conservation.
