Ikea has reduced the price of its popular BRANÄS laundry basket, crafted from natural rattan, by 20% in its stores across Spain. Previously priced at €49, the basket is now available for €39, providing a saving of €10 to customers interested in an effective storage solution for laundry.

The BRANÄS basket features an 80-litre capacity and a handmade construction using renewable rattan, contributing a natural aesthetic to bedrooms, bathrooms or laundry areas. Designed by the Sweedish Ikea team and identified by product code 202.147.31, it merges practical use with design appeal as an efficient way to collect laundry.

The manufacturer states the basket has undergone specific tests for bathroom use, where humidity can compromise less durable materials. Polyethylene plastic feet elevate the basket to prevent direct contact with damp surfaces, thus extending the lifespan of the rattan. This detail is particularly relevant in bathrooms where water can collect on the floor after bathing or showering.

The assembled basket measures 41 centimetres in width, 41 centimetres in depth and stands 60 centimetres tall. It can hold up to 9 kilograms of laundry, suitable for small to medium-sized households looking to centralise laundry storage. The construction involves multiple materials: rattan components and the bottom board are coated with a clear acrylic varnish, the frame is steel with a polyester powder coating, fasteners are galvanized steel, and the feet along with self-tapping screws are made of polyethylene plastic. Inside, a 100% polyester textile liner facilitates handling and is removable for washing.

Handcrafted production process

One key feature of the BRANÄS basket is its artisanal manufacture through manual weaving. This method ensures that each piece displays slight variations, adding uniqueness within the series. The rattan used is a renewable plant-based material, aligning with Ikea’s environmental sustainability strategy.

Cleaning instructions differ by component. The rattan structure should be wiped dry only, avoiding water or chemical products that could harm its protective varnish or alter the natural material’s properties. The interior fabric liner is machine washable at a maximum of 40 degrees Celsius with a normal cycle. Bleach, tumble drying and dry cleaning are discouraged. Ironing is allowed on a low setting up to 150 degrees Celsius, aiding the removal of wrinkles after washing.

Rattan and its decorative uses

Rattan is a natural fibre sourced from climbing palms native to tropical areas of Asia, Africa and Australia. It is valued for its robustness, flexibility and light weight, making it suitable for furniture and home accessories fabrication. Unlike hollow bamboo, rattan has a solid core that bends without breaking. Its warm, natural texture has grown in popularity within Scandinavian, Mediterranean and bohemian decor styles.

Baskets made from rattan are among the most common household applications of this material. An 80-litre basket can accommodate roughly nine kilograms of laundry, according to Ikea’s technical details. This amount corresponds approximately to a week’s laundry for one or two people or the daily output of a family of four. Actual capacity varies depending on the type of garment. Bulky items such as towels, blankets or coats take up more space than t-shirts or underwear.

To optimise the basket's use, it is advisable not to over-pack to allow airflow and reduce odours. Placement depends on each household’s layout. In spacious bathrooms, positioning it near the shower or bath makes it easier to deposit used items immediately after washing. In bedrooms, placing it in dressing or changing areas may be preferred. The elevated feet enable use in somewhat humid locations without damage, though adequate ventilation is recommended. Direct prolonged sun exposure should be avoided to preserve the rattan’s colour and prevent drying out the material.
