From 1 January 2026, connected V16 beacons will be the only legal device for signalling immobilised vehicles on Spanish roads, replacing traditional emergency warning triangles. The Spanish Civil Guard confirmed the change on social media, highlighting the need to place the beacon in the most visible part of the vehicle. The rule applies to cars, dual-purpose vehicles, goods transporters, and buses, while motorcycles are not required to carry one, though authorities recommend storing it in an accessible spot.

The connected V16 beacon is notable for its high-intensity light and its ability to transmit the vehicle’s location to the DGT 3.0 platform. This information is displayed on roadside panels and GPS devices, helping manage traffic in emergencies.

Features and Regulations of V16 Beacons

Beacons must meet strict certification standards under Spain’s General Vehicle Regulations. Only devices with a testing laboratory mark and visible identification number will be authorised, ensuring quality and reliability. Non-approved beacons will not be legal, and emergency triangles will lose their legal validity for Spanish-registered vehicles, though they may still be used abroad on foreign-registered cars.

Authorities stress correct placement of the beacon. Ideally, it should be as high as possible. If that is not feasible, it should be positioned where it is most visible to help other drivers spot the stopped vehicle quickly.

Mandatory Requirements by Vehicle Type

From the deadline onwards, all passenger cars, dual-purpose vehicles, and transport vehicles must carry a beacon, standardising emergency signalling and improving safety. Motorcycles are exempt, but use is recommended. The beacon should be kept within reach, such as a convenient storage compartment, without needing to dismount.

Importance of Maintenance and Proper Use

Owners must keep the beacon charged and check it periodically to ensure it works in emergencies. The Civil Guard reminds users that the beacon does not alert emergency services directly, so drivers must call 062 or 112 after activating the signal.

Connected V16 beacons represent a significant technological advance. By transmitting location automatically and emitting a visual signal, they provide early warning and improve road management through variable message signs and GPS navigation systems.
