Judging by what people are saying online and on social media, the introduction of the new European Union arrival/exit system has been a complete nightmare at Palma airport. In fact, according to a Bulletin poll, a sizeable number of people are thinking twice about booking a foreign holiday. The last thing anyone wants is a long delay at the airport and really the Spanish authorities should be doing more to resolve the teething problems.
This is not a case of Brexit-Britons-you-voted-for-it, this is a case of Mallorca’s customers having a nightmare experience. They should be bending over backwards to resolve what have been described as teething problems. Years ago, during the Franco days, if there was a substantial fall in value of sterling the Spanish government would devalue the peseta, so that Britons continued to have the same spending power.
Times may have changed drastically but tourism is probably more important to the Spanish economy than it was then. The Spanish or Balearic government can’t afford to mess with British tourism, it is vital to the economy. It would be a great shame if fewer tourists came to the island this year because of problems at the airport which could be resolved with more manpower.
