A new NATO without the United States

“It is the United States that should be booted out of NATO not countries like Spain who are acting correctly”

President Donald Trump’s bully boys are calling for Spain to be ejected from NATO because it failed to support Trump with his illegal attack on Iran. Be careful what you wish for.

Spain’s membership of NATO has never been popular in Spain in the first place. The parties on the left have never been big NATO supporters and with the rhetoric from the Trump administration the days of the old alliance appear to be numbered.

It is time that Europe and perhaps Canada and Australia formed a new defence alliance without the United States, which can no longer be considered a firm ally. Many political commentators say that the United States is NATO and they are probably not wrong. It also works for the United States giving them a commanding position in the military across Europe.

Is a defensive alliance possible without the United States? Yes of course. Britain, France and Germany are big military powers and if you add Canada and Australia you are talking quite a formidable force. I think Trump needs to be stopped in his tracks. Europe must stand up for itself.

At the moment it is all one-way traffic and the insults are coming in high and low from the other side of the Atlantic. Time for change.
