Time and time again we have heard local politicians spout forth about the Balearics being a safe and secure holiday destination - but it’s not alone in this world. There is more to a destination than security and that is value for money.

For years now, the Balearics has been warned to watch its pricing but very little notice was taken of captains of the tourist industry from overseas. However, more recently, businesses have been suffering a fall in takings - just take this Easter, the retail sector is not impressed. Restaurants and bars struggled last year and fear a repeat performance or worse.

There is only so much people will pay in a highly competitive market - there is only so much elasticity in people’s wallets and the Middle East conflict, thanks to President Trump, may just snap the band and kill the golden goose which has been laying so many golden eggs for the Mallorcan tourist industry and society in general for decades, generations.

Perhaps now is the time for some serious reflection about where the island’s tourist industry is going and, more importantly, where it wants to go and how it is going to get there. The tourist industry is very volatile, many people don’t care where they go as long as the sun shines and they get value for money, and that has to be respected and catered for, like it or not.
