The UK should no longer laugh at Spain

While the Spanish economy continues to outstrip the UK and other EU nations, the prime minister has also shown he is in tune with the public by standing up to Trump

I fail to understand why Spain receives so little attention in the UK media when it comes to issues such as the economy, immigration and the health service, for example.

Yes, lately, the Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has caught the media’s attention because of his position against Trump and Israel’s war against Iran. But once things do return to normal, if Spain does get a mention, it is either about travel or where the cheapest beer is.

Regularly branded a “socialist country” by certain sections of the media, Spain continues to be belittled. The UK always likes to draw comparisons with France or Germany, even Italy. But Spain is becoming the EU powerhouse in many areas and Sánchez is still unimpressed by certain allies.

Only this week he criticised the fact that governments such as those of Russia, Israel and the United States are “openly challenging the foundations of the international system”, whilst other countries remain silent or ambiguous “instead of defending international law”.

His “socialist” colleague Keir Starmer appears to share a similar view, especially on the war and does not want to get drawn in, but he is not firing clear statements. Spain is and Sánchez has shown that he is in tune with the opinion of the vast majority of the country over the war.
