I understand that opposition political groups need to oppose respective governments but there is always a danger that they may do more harm than good. Much is said about the crime-rate in London, a state of affairs which is dismissed by London police chiefs. So who is right? Donald Trump? Reform? Or the head of the Metropolitan Police?
Reform leader Nigel Farage says that crime is out of control in the British capital. Is this a valid accusation or is he just talking down London? If this is the case and he is doing it to win a few more votes, then it is a dangerous game because it could have a direct impact on London´s tourism trade. I know many Mallorcans who have been to the capital recently and have returned singing its praises.
Another chestnut is that there has been a mass exodus of millionaires from Britain. Yes, because successive governments have asked them to pay higher taxes. It is simple as that. Then there is the issue of boats crossing the Channel allegedly loaded with immigrants.
This is a problem faced across Europe and a solution needs to be found but that solution will not be found on social media where you encounter hundreds if not thousands of posts from people, some from dubious backgrounds who may or not have a hidden mandate, just making the problem worse with alarming and even racist posts. I hope for more tolerance in 2026 and far less scare-mongering. Talk is cheap but it has its consequences. Everything is not right in Europe but I cannot think of a nicer place to live in the whole world. Have a very happy Christmas.
