If it continues like this Mallorca will soon have a very big problem. I am of course talking about price inflation in Mallorca. This island appears to get more expensive everyday but wages remain the same and I believe that many will be cutting back this Christmas simply because they can't afford it. I was shocked this week when I discovered that the price of one of my favourite dishes at a Palma restaurant had increased from 13 euros to 19.
As far as I know this price increase had not been advertised. Once a plate of a paella cost 11 euros; in some places it has now risen to 22. That is 44 euros for two people for a dish which was always considered to be relatively cheap.
The other day I ordered a small beer in a popular bar and I was amazed to discover that it cost 3.50 euros. Palma prices are now on a par with London where prices are 20 percent higher than the rest of the country. I find this state of affairs outrageous. Mallorca is a fantastic place but there does need to be an element of price control because otherwise it will price itself out of the market and this will be very bad news for the tourist industry.
I know that restaurants are having it tough because their overheads are also rising, but passing these additional costs more and more on to the consumer is a mistake. Offer value for money and perhaps reintroduce the menu of the day otherwise people will just vote with their feet and stay at home.
