Ignore your screen and enjoy Mallorca

People who text on their phones while walking are becoming a menace and when it comes to tourists, put them away, look up and admire the island

Walking round parts of Palma, most of Palma, is becoming increasingly frustrating because you spend most of your time having to navigate your way round people glued to their mobiles - it’s even becoming a challenge in shops, restaurants and supermarkets. Apart from being a pain, it’s a shame people, especially visitors, can’t put their phones away for a while and just look up and enjoy the delights of Palma and other parts of Mallorca.

Earlier this year, the DGT traffic department warned that distracted walking is a growing hazard and people could face a fine of €200 (£170) for ignoring traffic signals or directions from a traffic officer. Walking across motorways or dual carriageways will be met with a fine of €80. Failing to use zebra crossings can result in a €80 fine.

“Eyes up, feet down, and only step out if it’s safe for you and the drivers. Newsflash: the road doesn’t revolve around you. Obey traffic signals. Stay off motorways and dual carriageways – they’re for wheels, not heels,” the DGT stated. So what’s happened?

Nothing. People are so wrapped up in their social media worlds, they appear to have lost all interest in the real world. And at times it’s simply rude. I don’t enjoy going out for a meal to spend the whole time listening to a someone else’s conversation. Let’s have some phone etiquette please.
