Brits abroad and paperwork

Instead of moaning and growing on social media, spend your time more fruitfully and get your paperwork in order

What is it with Brits and paperwork? Or at least in Spain. We have had at least four years to get the new TIE residence cards, which replaced the “Green Certificate” for British citizens post-Brexit. There are still sizeable numbers of Britons who haven’t got their TIE card.

I read some of the social media comments by expat Britons following our interview with British ambassador to Spain, Sir Alex Ellis, in which he urged British citizens to get their paperwork in order. Many claimed that they hadn’t been told. This is totally untrue.

The British Embassy has been giving regular updates; the latest was a video message from the British ambassador in which he made it quite clear that it was vital that British citizens got their TIE card. The other grudge by the social media moaners is that there are no appointments ... we’ve had four years, surely that was enough time to get an appointment?

Without a TIE card you could find yourself not being able to enter or depart Spain once the new European biometric travel system comes into place. My advice is instead of moaning and groaning on social media, invest the time more fruitfully by getting your paperwork in order. Times have changed and if you are not totally legal you could find yourself returning “home.”
