Battle lines are drawn in tourist industry

Bars and restaurants complain that higher hotel prices mean that tourists have less to spend but hoteliers tell them to invest to reap the benefits

In the red corner you have the hoteliers in the blue the rest of the tourist industry and they look set for a major winter battle. The first shots have already been fired.

Bars and restaurants have complained that higher hotel prices mean that tourists have less money to spend while the hoteliers hit back this week saying that they (the bar and restaurant owners) should invest money in their businesses and then they would be able to raise their prices as well.

To be honest hoteliers have invested in their businesses over the years and the majority are now in the four star category. Restaurant and bar owners have also splashed the cash but not enough according to the hoteliers. Who will win? The hoteliers obviously because without hotels the local tourist industry is not fit for purpose.

Perhaps dialogue is needed between the two warring sides but the tourist industry locally is evolving. I have noticed a major increase in restaurant prices over the last few years. It has become so pronounced in some areas that both residents and tourists have gone elsewhere.

I would urge local restaurants to serve more local dishes using Mallorca produce and try and keep prices under control. Everyone loves a pizza but you can get one anywhere and at any price. Local dishes could add to the whole holiday experience.
