The local authorities have gone into over-drive to try and explain why there has been quite a major drop in German tourism to Mallorca. In fact in July it dropped by eight percent and there could be a similar fall in August. The chief excuse is that some Germans are finding the island expensive and are going to cheaper destinations elsewhere.
Another reason is that the German economy is in recession. An eight percent fall when you are dealing with a market which is measured in millions is a big drop and if it continues, then the dream of some of fewer tourists to the island could become a reality.
The problem, I believe, is that no-one ever thought that the German market would stutter. The Germans will always come to Mallorca was the theory. Not this year. Taking all this into account then perhaps it wasn’t a great idea for local hoteliers and restaurant and bar owners to raise their prices, on top of big increases already announced for 2023.
Some Mallorcans want fewer tourists but I doubt that many thought that it would be the Germans that would fall. It is bad news and the alarm bells will be ringing in the local ministry for tourism. Even though a sizeable number of people want fewer tourists they don’t want it to affect their income, but as we all know you can’t have your cake and eat it.
