This is what you wanted! Fewer tourists

Mission accomplished. 75 percent of the population wants fewer tourists. So why is everyone is such a flap about the summer season?

It must give the Balearic government a lot of satisfaction; by doing very little they have managed to achieve the dream of 75 percent of the local population who want fewer tourists. Some would say that the local government have done nothing apart from sitting on the fence after the anti-tourism protests earlier this summer but it is mission accomplished.

Their own survey suggests that eight out of ten Mallorcans want fewer tourists. So we shouldn’t be concerned about the big drop in German tourism forecast for this season because it is what a majority of people want? Or even a further predicted fall in British tourism? So all is well in the Balearics, we’ve got what we wanted...Or have we? I would love to know what the survey question was... “with less tourism would your quality of life improve?”

Obviously the answer would be yes but you can bet your button dollar that if the question was “are you prepared to sacrifice part of your income for fewer tourists”, the answer would be a clear No. The problem in the Balearics at the moment is no-one really knows what they want. The ideal scenario would be “fewer tourists with a greater spending power... .” Unfortunately and at least for Mallorca, we have fewer tourists, who are going elsewhere because it is too expensive.
