The summer is winding down, Mallorca is getting quieter, although I’ve felt that Palma has not been anywhere near as busy as usual this summer. So it’s time for a holiday, and where better to enjoy one than Mallorca? No faffing about at airports, worries about baggage allowances or flight disruptions.1
However, this comes at a price. Despite having been bombarded by the major hotel chains all summer with “flash” offers of up to 50 percent, which one does not expect during peak season, I’m still not only paying top euro but, as I found out last year, also far more than foreign tourists on package holidays.
So, apart from having been charged tourist prices since Covid, I’m now subsidising foreign holidaymakers coming to Mallorca, which I find unfair and an insult. And I’m not alone. Many of my friends have been forced to change their lifestyles over the past few years because wages in Mallorca and other parts of Spain have fallen way short of keeping pace with the rising cost of living and abusive pricing.
People are going out less and when they do, they’re watching their euros and that’s not much fun.
Mallorca may have seen the rise in “sandwich tourists” but the same can be said for the locals, as the price of living in so-called paradise becomes increasingly tough to cover.
